Since 1942, the Alamo Theatre has proudly entertained visitors across Jackson and beyond. The theatre has shown movies, hosted musical competitions, and presented blues and jazz concerts by historic artists such as B.B. King, Nat “King” Cole, Elmore James, Louis Jordan, and Cab Calloway during the 1940s and 50s. Local Jackson resident Dorothy Moore’s many victories as the Alamo’s talent contests ultimately led to a successful recording career. The Alamo has also been host to gospel groups and vocal ensembles, stand-up comedy, and more.
As the theatre has evolved through the years, community restorations and attempts to keep the Alamo on solid ground have been successful. It has remained a historic icon in the heart of the Historic Farish Street District for over 70 years, and is now a site marked on the Mississippi Blues Trail, which highlights historic places where the Blues was born.
