  • Todd Goddard and Jamie Harrison signing event

    2025-11-11T16:30:00+0000

Join us for an event celebrating the life of Jim Harrison with his daughter, Jamie, and her new novel A River Dream, as well as Todd Goddard and his new biography about Harrison, Devouring Time.

Devouring Time is the definitive biography of Jim Harrison—one of America’s most beloved writers—and a penetrating deep dive into the life of the talent behind Legends of the Fall, Dalva, and True North.

Jim Harrison (1937–2016) was widely considered one of the finest voices of his generation. His twenty-one books of fiction and fourteen books of poetry influenced a generation of writers. Harrison helped to shape the course of contemporary American literature, revitalizing in particular the novella form, of which he was a recognized master.

Based on more than one hundred original interviews and drawing upon Harrison’s collected papers, Devouring Time is the first and only literary biography of this beloved author, whose playful, irreverent, and spiritual work continues to find and delight new readers.

Todd Goddard is an associate professor of literary studies at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He received his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

In A River Dream, Clark City’s former editor, novelist Jamie Harrison, has collected some of the best of the press’s prose, art, and poetry, in a glorious celebration of a small and lost world.

An anthology and tribute to a unique independent publisher, Clark City Press.

In 1987, the painter and author and fly fisherman Russell Chatham, renowned for his stunning landscape paintings and his appetite for life, decided to take control of his own career by creating a publishing house in Livingston, Montana.

What began as an effort to publish Chatham’s own work and that of his friends (a large and varied group) in elegant trade paperbacks morphed into something grander and more wayward. Clark City Press published Thomas McGuane on fishing and memory, Guy de la Valdene on hunting woodcock, Richard Hugo’s only mystery, James Crumley’s short stories, and Peter Stackpole’s Life photos from the golden age of Hollywood.

Jamie Harrison became the editor at the Clark City Press in 1987 and has now lived in Montana for more than thirty years.

  • Pigeons Playing Ping Pong with special guest Eddie 9V

    2025-11-11T19:30:00+0000

If you ever wondered what “seizing the moment” sounds like personified, look no further than Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, the four-piece musical powerhouse known for their head-turning high-energy psychedelic funk shows. Infectious energy is an understatement.

The Maryland quartet — “Scrambled Greg” Ormont [vocals, guitar], Jeremy Schon [guitar, vocals], Ben [bass, vocals], and Alex “Gator” Petropulos [drums, vocals]—not only squeezes the juice out of every second, but they harness life’s energy within their hypnotic hybrid of funk, rock and psychedelic groove.

With a devout audience, affectionately known as “The Flock,” and a trail of sold-out tours behind them, the band takes a major step forward once again on their seventh full-length offering, Day In Time, set to release on April 26, 2024.

“This album is a snapshot of our band as a group and as individuals,” notes Greg. “The title serves as a reminder that life moves fast, so we better make the most of each day, make each second count. 15 years as a band have flown by. We started in college and now we’re all growing up, most of us have even become dads recently, so we’re evolving both personally and musically, and we’re happily embracing those changes. That said, we still feel like kids when we’re getting wild on stage and know we always will.”

This forward motion has only accelerated over the years for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. Renowned as a live tour de force, PPPP has tallied tens of millions of streams and performed to impassioned crowds everywhere from Red Rocks Amphitheatre and The Capitol Theatre to festivals such as Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, Jam Cruise, and more. Most recently, they earned widespread acclaim for 2022’s Perspective, a 12-track “funk-filled odyssey” as described by Relix. However, Day In Time saw them realize another level of cohesion in the studio.

“This album is the most cohesive group of songs we’ve ever had in the studio,” says Jeremy. “On our previous albums, there were usually older songs mixed in with our newer material. However, all the tracks on ‘Day In Time’ really represent our current writing style and where we are as a band today.”

A bevy of friends also joined the party. On the boisterous “Let The Boogie Out,” Here Come The Mummies’ horn section added healthy doses of funk and “truly decided to let the boogie out,” according to Jeremy. Ben “Smiley” Silverstein (The Main Squeeze; Smile High) shines on the titular “Day In Time” with a raucous keyboard solo, while keyboardists Joey Porter (The Motet) and Alric “A.C.” Carter (Tauk) join forces on the soulful “Overtime.” Carter also adds rich depth with keys on “Beneath The Surface,” while Jon O’Hallaron (Chalk Dinosaur) infuses rhythmic keys and electronic flavor on the instrumental standout, “Skinner.” Another first, all four members of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong take inspired solos on the same record.

“With this being our seventh full-length album, we’re more comfortable in the studio than ever, which has given us the freedom to take some bigger swings reminiscent of our live shows.” notes Greg.

  • Lily King signs HEART THE LOVER

    2025-11-12T17:00:00+0000

    In conversation with Holly Lange.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Writers & Lovers comes a magnificent and intimate new novel of desire, friendship, and the lasting impact of first love

You knew I’d write a book about you someday.

Our narrator understands good love stories—their secrets and subtext, their highs and free falls. But her greatest love story, the one she lived, never followed the simple rules.

In the fall of her senior year of college, she meets two star students from her 17th-Century Lit class: Sam and Yash. Best friends living off campus in the elegant house of a professor on sabbatical, the boys invite her into their intoxicating world of academic fervor, rapid-fire banter and raucous card games. They nickname her Jordan, and she quickly discovers the pleasures of friendship, love and her own intellectual ambition. But youthful passion is unpredictable, and soon she finds herself at the center of a charged and intricate triangle. As graduation comes and goes, choices made will alter these three lives forever.

Decades later, the vulnerable days of Jordan's youth seem comfortably behind her. But when a surprise visit and unexpected news brings the past crashing into the present, she returns to a world she left behind and must confront the decisions and deceptions of her younger self.

Written with the superb wit and emotional sensitivity fans and critics of Lily King have come to adore, Heart the Lover is a deeply moving love story that celebrates literature, forgiveness, and the transformative bonds that shape our lives. Wise, unforgettable, and with a delightful connective thread to Writers & Lovers, this is King at her very best, affirming her as a masterful chronicler of the human experience and one of the finest novelists at work today.

Lily King is the New York Times bestselling author of six novels, including Euphoria and Writers & Lovers, and the story collection Five Tuesdays in Winter. Her work has won numerous prizes and awards, including the Kirkus Prize, the New England Book Award for Fiction, the Maine Book Award for Fiction, and a Whiting Award. Her books have been translated into twenty-eight languages. She lives in Portland, Maine.

  • Brooks Eason signing I REMEMBER EVERYTHING

    2025-11-13T17:00:00+0000

Minutes after giving a speech at his investiture, the newly elected president of the state bar association does the unthinkable. He kills his best friend.

Sam Thompson and Jeff Freeman become best friends on the day they meet the summer they turn eight. They explore the backwoods of their hometown when they’re boys and the wilderness of America when they’re men. Sam serves as the best man in Jeff’s wedding and, a decade later, they swap roles. They name their sons for each other and are best friends until the day Jeff dies.

I Remember Everything traces their lives for more than five decades, from growing up to growing old, and follows them on grand adventures, including two magnificent road trips. The first is to New England the year they graduate from high school, the second to the mountains of the West with their sons more than thirty years later. The book also explores their mutual love for the music of the late John Prine, one of the greatest songwriters America has ever known. “I Remember Everything” was the title of his last song.

But the book is about more than an enduring friendship and memorable music. It’s also about Jeff’s death and all that happens in its wake. How and why does Sam kill Jeff? Does Sam do the right thing the night it happens and all the days that follow? How can a man kill his best friend and deliver his eulogy four days later?

Author Brooks Eason has created a riveting story and two unforgettable characters in I Remember Everything. Readers will come to know and love Sam Thompson and Jeff Freeman and remember everything about them.

Brooks Eason was born in a home for unwed mothers in New Orleans, grew up in Tupelo, and has lived in and around Jackson since 1982. He retired after forty years of practicing law to a life of walking dogs and writing books. He has three children and five grandchildren and lives in Madison with his wife Carrie, three rescue dogs, and an orange tabby cat rescued from under a shrub alongside Frontage Road in Jackson. In their spare time, Brooks and Carrie host house concerts and dance in the kitchen. I Remember Everything is his seventh book.

  • Sim Butler signs AND THE DRAGONS DO COME

    2025-11-18T17:00:00+0000

A gripping account of one family’s battle to protect their daughter against transphobia and hate in contemporary America.

Our country stands at a critical cultural crossroads, with a wave of anti-trans legislation emerging at unprecedented levels targeting trans children, in particular, who face increasing stigmatization and erasure. Sim Butler’s And the Dragons Do Come is a poignant account of one family’s experience of parenting and supporting a trans child against this nightmarish backdrop.

In recent years, the Butler family faced an impossible reality in their home state of Alabama, where trans rights are increasingly under attack. Butler recounts their family’s struggles and sacrifices to protect their trans child against the barrage of state-sanctioned intolerance in the legal, educational, and health arenas.

Around the time she turned twelve, his daughter’s personal struggles became political fodder. Along with other trans kids, she was outlawed from playing sports and forbidden to use the girls’ bathroom. Another law made Butler and his wife felons for seeking trans-affirming health care for her. When her charter school was featured in several gubernatorial campaign ads, local community members began driving through the parking lot to yell at the trans kids.

Serving both as a compassionate story of one family’s struggle for acceptance and as a window onto a fraught issue that parents, grandparents, other family members, and friends are confronting across the nation, And the Dragons Do Come provides a firsthand perspective on the human cost of anti-trans sentiment.

Sim Butler is an associate professor at the University of Alabama. He lives with his family in South Carolina.

  • Friendsgiving

    2025-11-18T17:30:00+0000

This year, we’re bringing Friendsgiving back to where it all began, The Cedars, for an evening that feels like coming home. Together, we’ll celebrate the community we build and support with a one-of-a-kind storytelling experience through food, created by Derek Emerson of Caet, Local 463, Sacred Ground, Little Effie and Emerson Provisions, and the soon-to-be Masa Mesa at The District at Eastover.

We all have friends who have become as close as family. For many of us, Friendsgiving has always been about gathering with those people, whether related by blood or by choice, and creating traditions that remind us we belong. This is our chance to do just that: to come together, share stories, and build connections that strengthen the places we call home.

Life gets busy. Work, commitments, and everything in between often pull us in different directions. Friendsgiving is an invitation to pause, gather around the table, and give thanks, not just for what we have, but for the people and communities who make it meaningful.

All that’s left is for you to bring your people—family, friends, neighbors, colleagues—and join us for an evening of food, fellowship, and celebration.

Happy hour (with appetizer first course): 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

    Dinner: 6:30 p.m.

  • Otis Westbrook Pickett Sr. signs Southern Shepherds, Savage Wolves

    2025-11-20T17:00:00+0000

    In conversation with DeSean Dyson.

Presbyterian Church missionaries and the theology of race, enslavement, and Native American removal.

In Southern Shepherds, Savage Wolves, Otis Westbrook Pickett Sr. examines Presbyterian missionaries' attempts to live up to their understood calling from their God to serve as shepherds for their congregations. These missionaries, Pickett finds, faltered in this duty when faced with the racial hierarchy of an enslaved society. He focuses on individual missionaries, most prominently John Lafayette Girardeau and T. C. Stuart, who attempted to integrate enslaved, and later freed, men and women into the church. By examining these missionaries and mission churches, Pickett sheds new light not only on the complicated role that religion played in shaping slavery and Native American removal in the US South but also the fate of these ideas in the crucible of the Civil War and its aftermath.

Otis Westbrook Pickett Sr. is university historian and clinical assistant professor in the College of Education at Clemson University. He holds an MA from Covenant Theological Seminary, an MA in history from College of Charleston, and a PhD in history from University of Mississippi.

  • Kelly Lundquist signs BEARD

    2025-12-09T17:00:00+0000

    In conversation with David Miller.

Kelly Foster Lundquist was nineteen when she met Devin at church camp in the late ’90s. Immediately inseparable, the two bonded over bootleg Tori Amos recordings and a sense of disconnection from the spiritual fervor of their fellow camp counselors. Devin was classically handsome and Kelly on the plain side of pretty, but they matched. Their twinned search for God, acceptance, and love would profoundly shape the rest of their lives.

In this striking debut memoir, Lundquist revisits her relationship with Devin twenty years after their divorce, as she investigates the “beard” trope in literature, culture, and her own romantic life. The straight woman who unwittingly marries a gay man is either a laughingstock or a fool—or both—in the popular imagination. And yet reality—much like desire—is more wild. Reality is midnight pad Thai, tenderness in Ralph Lauren sheets, ritual visits to Blockbuster, and beginning a PhD in queer theory while your husband secretly struggles to reconcile his double life.

A tour de force of empathy and vivid prose, Beard reckons honestly with the harm done to both husband and wife by churches that required rigid performances of gender and sexuality. In contrast, Lundquist learns to let go of brittle certainties as she embraces what her first marriage taught her about risk and redemption.

Kelly Foster Lundquist teaches writing at North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. A 2013 Milton postgraduate fellow at Image Journal and Kenyon Review writers’ alum, her work has appeared in Last Syllable, Whale Road Review, and The Academy Stories among other places. She has an MFA in creative writing from Seattle Pacific University and an MA in English from Mississippi College, and remains a PhD dropout. Lundquist lives in a little red house by the Mississippi River with her spouse and daughter.

  • Justin Randolph signs MISSISSIPPI LAW

    2025-12-11T17:00:00+0000

How American police power shaped fights for Black freedom.

In the segregated American South, policing was war. Rampant police violence came to the back roads and cattle pastures of America’s rural countryside as ideas of race, property, and belonging reshaped the role of government in everyday life. In Mississippi Law, Justin Randolph explores rural law enforcement to explain US racial authoritarianism between the Civil War and the civil rights movement. In Jim Crow Mississippi, the force behind the police officer’s autocracy carried legacies of empire and slavery into the age of agribusiness and automobiles—from state troops and slave patrols to state troopers and highway patrols. But this is no isolated story of individual barbarism. US military and reform traditions informed ruling-class beliefs in thoughtful police improvement through both the state militia and its inheritor, the state police.

Black Mississippians fought to raise awareness and defend their loved ones against the violence spawned by paramilitary police reform. Some took up arms against police officers; others imagined a legal off-ramp to remake public safety after Jim Crow. Ultimately, the transformation of what one activist called “Mississippi Law” came with more funding and more authority for policing, a key piece of infrastructure for the age of mass incarceration that followed the civil rights revolution. Recounting the works of both famous and forgotten activists, Mississippi Law is a genealogy of Jim Crow rule and dreams of a safety that might have been and might yet be.

Justin Randolph is assistant professor of history at Texas A&M University.

  • Ace Atkins signing EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD

    2025-12-13T14:00:00+0000

Elmore Leonard meets Robert Ludlum in a rollicking comedic thriller set in 1985 from acclaimed author Ace Atkins, in which a suburban teen suspects his mom’s new boyfriend is the ultimate bad guy—a KGB agent.

It’s 1985, what will soon become known as “The Year of the Spy,” and fourteen-year-old Peter Bennett is convinced his mom’s new boyfriend is a Russian agent. “Gary” isn’t in the phone book, has an unidentifiable European accent, and keeps a gun in the glove box of his convertible Porsche. Peter thinks Gary only wants to get close to his mom because she works at Scientific Atlanta, a lab with big government contracts. But who is going to believe him? He’s just a kid into BMX and MTV.

But after another woman who works at the lab is killed, Peter recruits an unlikely pair of allies—a has-been pulp writer and muckraker named Dennis Hotchner and his drag performer buddy and heavy, Jackie Demure. Both soon become the target of an unhinged Russian hitman (Is it Gary? Maybe!) with a serious Phil Collins obsession.

Meanwhile, Sylvia Weaver, a young, Black FBI agent, investigates Scientific Atlanta in the wake of the employee’s murder and discovers a nest of Russian spies in the Southern “city too busy to hate.” Little does she know her investigation is being thwarted by a seriously compromised colleague in Washington, D.C., who is in league with a lovesick, hypochondriac KGB defector who is playing both sides of the Cold War to his benefit.

As Ronald Reagan and Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev prepare for a historic nuclear summit in Geneva, what happens in Atlanta might change the course of the Cold War, the twentieth century, and Peter Bennett’s freshman year of high school.

Ace Atkins is an award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of more than thirty novels and numerous short stories. A former college football player and newspaper reporter, he's a recipient of the Richard Wright Literary Excellence Award, the Harper Lee Award, and is a member of the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame. He lives with his wife Angela and two children in Oxford, Mississippi.

  • Liam St. John

    2025-12-15T19:30:00+0000

Liam St. John had plenty of opportunities to call it quits, to stop pursuing his dreams as a singer and songwriter. He wouldn’t need to feel bad; he had worked his ass off for years and sometimes, things just don’t work out the way you plan. But that’s what makes this story all the sweeter. St. John is a star for all the dreamers, a guiding light for following the things that give you life even when all the signs are neon bright and emphatically suggesting to stop, to quit, to turn around! The Spokane-born artist first found validation that he made the right call back in 2020 when he wowed Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton on season 19 of NBC's The Voice with his bluesy take on “Sex and Candy.” Before ultimately landing in Nashville, after getting knocked out of the battle rounds on The Voice, Liam bet it all on himself and moved to Los Angeles, where he wrote his first hit, “Dipped in Bleach.” With that success and the subsequent move to Nashville, St. John started writing new songs, and on these, he challenged himself to write more deeply, expand his sonic range, and tease out new strands of the roots and rock and roll that fans have grown so enamored by over the years. The results, tracks like “Landslide Over The Highway” and “Believer,” are his strongest to date. For Liam, it’s never been about “if,” but “when.” Put in the work, stay patient, stay humble, and results will come.

  • Melody Golding signs HOMETOWN MISSISSIPPI

    2025-12-19T12:00:00+0000

A vibrant portrait of thirty Mississippi towns, blending photography with personal narratives, to explore the unique identities that define the state.

Hometown Mississippi offers an intimate glimpse into thirty Mississippi towns through the lens of author, photographer, and artist Melody Golding. In this stunning collection, Golding captures the essence of her state in the summer of 2024, blending photography and personal exploration to create a colorful and contemporary portrait of Mississippi. From the hills in the north to the sandy shores of the south, from the Piney Woods to the Mississippi River towns and the storied Mississippi Delta, Golding's journey takes readers off the beaten path, away from interstates, and along the winding back roads and highways that once served as the main thoroughfares for these unique small-town destinations.

Each town Golding visits has its own special attractions, including historical landmarks, cultural offerings, recreational spaces, colleges and universities, scenic natural beauty, tourist attractions, and ties to some of the many celebrities Mississippi calls its own. All are distinct, yet all share a common pride in their local identity.

Within the pages of this book, more than fifty Mississippians reflect on their connection to the Magnolia State, offering heartfelt insights into the experiences, traditions, and character of their communities. With warmth and generosity, Mississippians ranging from Morgan Freeman to Marty Stuart to Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker, from university presidents to local business owners, share what it means to call Mississippi home.

Melody Golding (Vicksburg, Mississippi) is an author, a photographer, and an artist. The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History Archives Center acquired her solo documentary exhibit on Hurricane Katrina and her documentary photography and oral history project on wild boar hunting in the Mississippi Delta. Her photographs are on display at the Department of Homeland Security and have been featured in solo exhibitions at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC, and at numerous universities, colleges, and museums. Her Katrina photos will be the subject of a solo exhibition at the Two Mississippi Museums in 2025 in honor of the twentieth anniversary of the storm's impact on Mississippi. She is author of Katrina: Mississippi Women Remember, Panther Tract: Wild Boar Hunting in the Mississippi Delta, and Life Between the Levees: America's Riverboat Pilots, all published by University Press of Mississippi. Learn more about her work at www.melodygolding.com.

It’s Christmas in the South! Viral sensation and TikTok creator Landon Bryant reimagines the classic “The Night Before Christmas” poem with a unique and humorous Southern twist.

Merry Christmas and welcome to the South—home of sweet tea, boiled peanuts, wide front porches, and thick Southern drawls. No one knows Christmas—Southern-style—like Landon Bryant, the viral sensation and TikTok creator behind @LandonTalks. In Landon’s reimagining of the iconic “The Night Before Christmas” poem, you’ll be invited to nestle up all snug on your pallet and dream of divinity and strawberry pretzel salad. Discover what happens when quick as all get-out, a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer start pawin’ and prancin’ each little hoof on the roof of Landon’s house. You’ll be fixin’ to clutch your pearls when St. Nicholas comes down the chimney with a bound!

As a bonus, Landon also shares his favorite family recipe for sweet potato casserole and a glossary for decoding Southern slang and favorite Southern-isms. Whether you live in the South or just love Southern culture, this adorably charming gift book is going to be your favorite Christmas staple for years to come. I swanny!

Landon Bryant is a dynamic force in the world of social media, rapidly gaining fame as an influential Southern storyteller. You likely know Landon from his often hilarious, sometimes controversial (when it comes to sugar or salt on grits), and always insightful "let's discuss..." monologues on Southern culture. His journey, however, roots back to his days as an acclaimed art teacher whose passion for education continues but now with a much wider audience. Known for his captivating speaking engagements and Southern flair, Landon leaves audiences deeply satisfied with his influential and authentic voice from the South.
