Other Information
Would you like a piece of your history to be represented in the Mississippi Museum of Art?
During this storytelling workshop, we will discuss the importance of objects to personal meaning-making and individual identities. Bring an object that has played a role in your, or your family’s, history.
This workshop is a great way to create and preserve family memories for future generations. With your permission, your object and story could also be displayed as part of our New Symphony of Time exhibition!
If you are having trouble deciding what to bring, here are some prompts to help you think of an object:
-
- What are some places in Mississippi (or beyond) that are important to you or your family? (Places you’ve lived, moved to, or you feel a connection to because your ancestors or elders came from there.) Is there an object that connects to this place?
- Who are the people that feel like family to you? (The people you would turn to with good news or when needing comfort.) Is there an object you have that reminds you of them?
- In what ways is your identity or your family’s identity unique? (Think about a special day in the last year—maybe a holiday or a celebration.) Is there an object that was involved?
- What objects hold sentimental value for you? Perhaps you have an object or family hand-me-down that you don’t know much about, but still choose to preserve because you have an emotional connection to it.
